The Australian Terrier was developed in 19th-century Tasmania by crossing British working terrier imports (Yorkshire, Scottish, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Skye) for rodent and snake control on Australian farms. The first AKC-recognized breed from Australia, in 1960.
