The Cane Corso is a southern Italian Mastiff-type, historically used for farm guardianship and large-game hunting in Apulia and Campania. The breed nearly disappeared in the 1970s before restoration by Italian breed clubs; AKC recognition followed in 2010.
RVC VetCompass gives a median 8.1 years (n=303, small UK sample) — among the shortest-lived AKC breeds. GDV, cherry eye, and cardiac disease define late-life concerns; elbow dysplasia (OFA moderate) leads orthopedic findings.
