The Komondor is a Hungarian livestock guardian breed documented back to the 9th-century Magyar migration into the Carpathian Basin. The white corded coat evolved as protection from wolves and cold; the cords form naturally as the adult coat matures. AKC recognition dates to 1937.
Not in RVC VetCompass; breed-standard estimates indicate 10-12 years. Gastric dilatation-volvulus and hip dysplasia define late-life concerns in this giant guardian; juvenile cataracts and cryptorchidism are secondary breed-club tracked issues.
