The Xoloitzcuintli is a sacred Aztec breed documented in Mesoamerican archaeology back 3,500 years. Hairless and coated varieties occur in the same litter; the breed is Mexico's national dog, recovered from near-extinction in the 1950s. AKC recognition dates to 2011.
