The Xoloitzcuintli is a sacred Aztec breed documented in Mesoamerican archaeology back 3,500 years. Hairless and coated varieties occur in the same litter; the breed is Mexico's national dog, recovered from near-extinction in the 1950s. AKC recognition dates to 2011.
Not in RVC VetCompass; breed-standard estimates indicate 13-18 years. Hairless variety dental disease (missing adult teeth) and sunburn risk shape welfare; allergy-related skin issues, patellar luxation, and hip dysplasia are OFA-tracked.
