Formula

How this calculator works

Published breed median where matched to McMillan et al. 2024; other references labelled separately. No individual countdown.

How this calculator works

Select a breed and enter calendar age. The result explains what the source supports and does not produce an individual survival forecast.

  1. 1

    Look up the breed reference

Where the breed matches Supplementary Table S3, we show the published median from McMillan et al. (2024). Other reference estimates are labelled separately. Unresolved legacy study matches are withheld.

McMillan et al. 2024, Table S3.

  2. 2

    age / reference × 100

This compares calendar age with a reference value. It is not a survival percentile. The calculator does not subtract age from the median or apply a fixed body-condition penalty.

Context

When to use this calculator

Use this to understand the source behind a breed reference. Discuss individual health and care decisions with a veterinarian who knows your dog. The result does not set a screening schedule or predict years left.

FAQ

Frequently asked

  • Does this predict how long my dog has left?

No. A population median is not an individual forecast. Predicting remaining life would require an appropriate conditional survival model and relevant individual evidence, which this tool does not have.

  • What if my dog is older than the breed median?

The age/reference percentage can exceed 100%. That does not mean zero years remain or that your dog has passed a maximum lifespan.

  • Why did weight and body-condition adjustments disappear?

The earlier fixed year adjustments were not validated as an individual prediction model. Health and body condition matter, but this tool cannot translate them into a reliable number of years gained or lost.
